An interesting feature of short-term memory is that its limit of about seven items is not as limiting as it would seem. The reason is that what constitutes an item need not be something as simple as a single digit. In fact, it can be a fairly large block of information. George Miller defined grouping items of information into units as chunking. For example, when learning a friendâs phone number (typically seven digits), you probably chunk the information into a 3-digit and a 4-digit number in order to better retain the information.
