It was almost dawn when I woke. I had stayed in the tomb through the night and I had survived. I had no memory of anything that had happened. The room with sand and water, the passage filled with beetles, the strange light and the living statues… my clothes were clean and there was no physical evidence of my ordeal. I did not remember any of it. Nor did I remember the strangely old man who had told me his bizarre tale. But I felt stronger, confident enough to face my destiny. I wondered if my father had visited me and given me his courage. I think perhaps that I remembered something of my mysterious visitor… enough to recognise him the next time we met. Now when I dream, he sometimes visits my dreams. It was you in that dream, grandfather?

‘Of course it was, child.’

‘And of course, now I am dreaming again.’

‘Of course.’

‘You really must try to find a better way to communicate with me.’

‘Most people would simply be delighted to be visited from beyond the grave by their favourite grandfather.’

‘Was it real? The dream. There was no physical evidence on my clothing or skin. Did any of it really happen?’

‘Real is an interesting word, child… do you remember those incidents? Do you remember how they altered you, made you find the courage you needed to be the mighty Pharaoh Erimem?’

‘Yes.’

‘Then does it matter if they really happened? What matters is that their effects were real.’

‘That asks me some very interesting questions about what is actually real.’

‘Does it?’

‘Yes.’
