All wet: Hydrotherapy
The term hydrotherapy refers to the therapeutic use of water (hydro means water). Itâs an excellent way to get your circulation moving and helps to relax stiff muscles as well. To experience hydrotherapy, you expose your body to the extremes of hot and cold water by alternating back and forth between the two. You can do this by going into a sauna, a hot tub, or a bathtub of hot water. Then come out of the heat to hose or rinse yourself down with cold water every five or ten minutes. This may sound brutal, but ohhhh ⦠it feels so good when itâs over, and it certainly does get your blood circulating!
If you have heart problems, take a pass on alternating hot and cold hydrotherapy. The shock of cold may be more invigorating than is good for you.
It's probably coming as no surprise that I suggest adding essential oils to your hydrotherapy regime to stimulate circulation. Add about ten drops to the hot rocks in your sauna or to a two- to four-person hot tub. To be on the safe side, go easy at first by adding a few initial drops to make sure that the essential oil you add isnât going to smell too intense or irritate your skin.
Unlike vegetable oils, the components in most essential oils are too small to gum up your hot tub â but make sure that youâre using essential oil with no additives. Avoid resinous or gummy essential oils that might stick to the bottom and sides of the tub. Examples of these are myrrh gum and frankincense resin. These are probably not the essential oils you'd choose for a hot soak, anyway. You can recognize them because they have a thick, syrupy consistency.
