The National Security Agency (NSA) wanted to classify the key exchange, but Hellman fought hard to make cryptography research available to the public. There was tension between Hellman and the NSA for years because of Hellman’s hacker ethos of “knowledge should be free.”

One of Hellman’s current projects, called “Rethinking National Security”, asks: “In this age of nuclear weapons, pandemics, cyberattacks, terrorism, and environmental crises, is national security becoming inseparable from global security? If so, how do our current policies need to change?”

Another project, and perhaps one of Hellman’s most intriguing works, is A New Map for Relationships: Creating True Love at Home and Peace on the Planet, a love advice book written in collaboration with his wife Dorothie.
