Humor versus Stress
Someone who relishes being alive and enjoys their work stimulates their mind positively and reaches an anabolic state. Stress, on the other hand, produces a catabolic state; it produces destructive, immune suppressing, hormones.
A good example of the effectiveness of humor is a story of the recuperation of Norman Cousins. In his book “Anatomy of an Illness” the then very ill actor, who suffered from cancer, writes how he literally laughed himself healthy by watching comedies.
Use humor for your own benefit and that of others. It will strengthen your own immune system and theirs. A friendly smile generates warmth, openness and confers energy. Negative humor (sarcasm) destroys team play and effectiveness. It leads to disharmony, competition and isolation.
Humor should never be at the cost of others. It’s important that you can laugh about yourself and make yourself the butt of a joke. Humor reduces stress for all concerned, especially in tense situations. Don’t take life too seriously.
Communication, combined with laughter, helps us to relax and solve problems. Here are a couple of true stories about the power of laughter: A nine-year old girl in a psychiatric hospital in New York had not actively participated in anything for one-and-a half years. One day, in just twelve minutes, she laughed out loud and joined in the group with the help of a professional clown. After two hours, she was behaving like a normal child. In the same hospital a depressed 72-year-old man threatened to kill himself by refusing to eat. Thanks to the help of the same clown the man was discharged and pronounced healthy within two weeks.
Think about the people who make you feel good because they make you laugh. Those people can see the irony in problems and in life itself, and they can certainly laugh at themselves. Consider how you can bring more joy into your life. Surround yourself with witty, positive people. Ask yourself what you can change in your life and how you can add some humor. Learn to look at life with more joy and optimism and try to live that way.
