This map indicates all the Freedom Rides that took place in 1961. The most eventful Freedom Rides began on May 4 and May 17. Asterisks (*) indicate areas of violence. The worst attacks occurred in Anniston, Birmingham, and Montgomery, Alabama.

The Bus to Jackson

On May 24, Robert Kennedy felt comfortable that no violence would occur on the Montgomery-to-Jackson Freedom Ride. National Guardsmen were on the bus. Escorting the bus were police cars, helicopters, and U.S. Border Patrol airplanes. Officials in Mississippi agreed that the Riders would not be harmed. However, they also said that the Riders would be arrested once they arrived in Jackson.
