Paul tells his friends in Philippi, “I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead!” (Philippians 3:10-11 NLT). Paul wants to be close to Jesus in every way possible. He wants to be part of Christ’s glory, and he wants to be part of Christ’s pain. This communion with Jesus in everything is a transforming power in Paul’s life . . . and in ours.

As character like Christ’s takes shape in us more and more, we find ourselves hopeful. We know God is with us in what is hard now. We grow confident that we will never be alone in anything hard on the path ahead. We really can do what is necessary because Christ is with us in it all. We envision the future as a path of great goodness that we’ll enjoy and share with God and others no matter how challenging or painful certain stages of the journey might be. This isn’t wishful thinking. It’s the reality of empowering grace.

Hope like this, Paul says, “does not put us to shame” (Romans 5:5 ). Perhaps he’s saying that hope that is the fruit of deep-rooted character is reliable. We won’t find our hopes as mere wishful thinking or shallow optimism. We’ll find great courage to hope with strengthening joy as we envision the path ahead.
