When the sun cleared the mountains, warming the valley, frost winked out on the sage and grasses, and the songs of meadowlarks accompanied the two riders along the road toward the Elliott ranch. Clusters of yellow aspen nestled among spruce and fir on the ridges while, in the valley, golden cottonwoods edged the winding Clark’s Fork River. “Someday I hope to own a spread here.’ Bill said, sweeping his hand toward the mountain peaks of the Continental Divide to the east that curved around to border the valley far to the south.

“It’s a beautiful valley.” Fannie breathed deeply, savoring the autumn fragrance as the well-trained bay she rode stepped smartly beside the sorrel. Chatting easily, they soon passed under the high crossbar that marked the gate to the Elliott ranch. As they neared the big, log ranch house, a man and woman came out across the porch toward a horse and buggy hitched in front.

“Howdy, Dad. Mrs. Elliott,” Bill said, “Rode out to see the horses. Got to get right back though.” He dismounted and looped his reins over the hitching post. “This is Fannie Sperry.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Fannie. We saw you ride yesterday.” Mrs. Elliott’s warmth put Fannie at ease.

“We’re just now leaving for the fair. Dad Elliott strung the lines over the horse’s rump to the buggy. “You folks make yourselves at home. Bill, why don’t you show her my new colts?”

“Sure thing.” Bill helped Mrs. Elliott into the buggy and stood watching as the older couple drove across the range toward the main road. Then he and Fannie walked out past a barn, bunkhouse, and other outbuildings to a corral that held several saddle horses.

Fannie reached through the rails to pat the nose of a tan-and-white paint. “I like pintos,” she said.

“Smart saddle horses if you break them in right.” The paint nuzzled Bill’s shirt pocket while he stroked its neck. “Want to ride him?”

“I’d like to, but we don’t have much time.”

Neither moved. They stood looking at each other across the paint’s forelock. Then Bill spoke. “Guess you’re right. They can’t start the bull riding without the clown.”
