Certain sections of trails sometimes run quite close to local campgrounds, which can contain small stores and hiker boxes. The Oregon section of the PCT is a good example. However, don’t assume that because a campground is close by that it contains a well-stocked general store. In fact, don’t assume that a campground has any type of store at all. You will be greatly disappointed when, instead of a store, you encounter a water spigot, a picnic table, and some grass. Sometimes you’re lucky to get any of these. Also be aware of campground store hours, which frequently change, are seasonal, and tend to be short. Calling ahead from the prior resupply point is a good idea.

Other methods

You can often find communal free supplies called hiker boxes at hostels, post offices, or at any other town establishment friendly to hikers. They are filled by hikers who may have overstocked on an item or by members of the local community who are friendly to hikers. The boxes are quite common along the AT and PCT, less so along other trails. Savvy long-distance hikers often check the hiker boxes first before purchasing supplies. Hiker boxes usually aren’t a resupply strategy by themselves. They’re more of a way to save money and add variety to an existing re-supply strategy.

You can also yogi food from other hikers and tourists. The yogi cannot realistically be counted upon as a primary resupply strategy, but it’s reliable for netting a few extra calories during summer months when traveling through popular parks, especially on weekends. I elected to use the yogi to get to Canada in 2007.

The ability to appear hungry and despondent is helpful for a successful yogi. My friends Optimist and Stopwatch, who have the ability to look like they’ve fasted with Ghandi after being dragged through a garbage dump, repeatedly gain the horror-stricken sympathy of passersby, who insist on inviting them to cookouts and putting them up for the night. Optimist and Stopwatch happen to be fantastic company, so this is always a mutually beneficial arrangement.
